Reply to al Conoscuito:
I believe we may be relatives. My name is Patrice Ventresca, from Palo Alto, CA , the daughter of Benjamin Xavier Ventresca, of Canonsburg PA, and Ann Cecelia Tonkavich, of Cecil, PA. They met in grade school in Muse, PA, in the small, one-room schoolhouse between Cecil and Canonsburg, four miles south of Cecil.
In 1989, I travelled to Introdocua, a small village in Abruzzo, Italy in search of my relatives. My father asked me to search for his Aunt Vanilia, specifically, who, he explained, lived on the land in the tiny commune of Introdocua. His family were farmers. As I travelled through Abruzzo, even the locals made fun of my great aunt’s name, saying ‘Vanilia is for torta, not a lady’s name’ …”La vaniglia è per la torta, non è un nome da donna” playing in jest on the word la vaniglia the essential extract used for baking.
Perseverance paid off, and late in the afternoon I found my great aunt on her land, standing amongst grape vines surrounded by olive trees. As we chatted until late that night, in my broken Italian, we sipped her excellent wine and dipped her crusty bread into her robust, dark green olive oil.
When you reply, I’ll send you photos of Vanilia, her family, and of my family and me.
Cheers!
Ciao
