Castignano is a municipality located in the province of Ascoli Piceno at 475 meters (1558 feet) of altitude. Castignano has 2947 inhabitants and a surface area of 38.8 square kilometers (14.98 square miles).
The municipality of Castignano also includes the following suburbs: Castiglioni, Ripaberarda, Rufiano, San Martino, Sant'Angelo di Ripaberarda, San Venanzo, Castello, Contrada Pachierno.
Castignano was part of the Papal States before the unification of Italy (1861).
